BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/bcr-2016215275 DESCRIPTION A female infant weighing 530 g was born at 24 weeks of gestation. Antenatal ultrasounds were unremarkable. She was intubated and given surfactant at birth. Umbilical venous (UV) and arterial (UA) catheters were inserted through the identified separate vascular orifices. Postinsertion X-ray showed one catheter entering the left liver lobe and the other entering the right atrium (figure 1). The deeper inserted catheter was withdrawn but subsequently migrated into the hepatic vein (figure 2). Neither catheter showed a descent to the pelvis before ascending, as would have been observed in the UA; it is speculated that they were in the UV, indicating the persistence of right umbilical vein (PRUV). The catheter entering the hepatic vein was removed and a new catheter was inserted through the third vascular orifice of the umbilicus. Ultrasound imaging of the UV catheter showed the UV tip in the left portal vein, instead of being in

Pericardial Effusion in an Extreme Low Birth Weight Neonate with Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter
Background: Pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade are the rare complications of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC insertion) in extreme low birth weight infants. In this regard, paying attention to these complications is of utmost importance, because they can result in infant death. Case report: The case of our infant is a sa...
متن کاملThe Effect of Maternal Anemia and Umbilical Cord Cortisol Level on Birth Weight and Length
Background & Aims: Maternal anemia in pregnancy is a considerable risk factor for both mother and fetus. Growth retardation, intra uterine fetal death, maternal cardiovascular symptoms and reduction in blood supply are among outcomes of maternal anemia. Since there are different reports about the relationship between low maternal hemoglobin level and low birght weight, the precent study was des...
متن کاملAggressive parenteral nutrition in sick very low birth weight babies: a randomized controlled trial.
Survival of preterm neonates in developing world has improved. Developing countries lag behind in nutritional management in NICU especially parenteral nutrition (PN). This randomized controlled trial was done to evaluate the effect of aggressive parenteral nutrition on nitrogen retention of sick VLBW and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) babies. From September 2009 to February 2010, total 34 ba...
متن کاملBone Mineral Density According to Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry is Associated with Serial Serum Alkaline Phosphatase Level in Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants at Discharge.
BACKGROUND To examine bone mineral density in extremely low birth weight infants at discharge and investigate whether serial measurements of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and phosphate can predict bone mineralization. METHODS The individuals were 70 preterm infants. Serum calcium, phosphate, and ALP were measured at weekly intervals during admission in extremely low birth weight infants (m...
